Standing on the Shoulders of Sholem Aleichem
AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 17, 2016
Image result for sholem aleichemFrench filmmaker Jean-Gabriel Davis takes us on a journey across Europe to learn where Yiddish continues to be spoken today. These are locales where Yiddish language and culture was a presence prior to World War II, but where young persons in particular are committed to keeping it alive. We meet a variety of individuals- students, musicians, actors- all of whom are currently involved in some aspect of Yiddish culture. A fitting tribute to Sholem Aleichem whose centennial yahrtzeit we celebrate this year.

Yiddish: The Mother Tongue
REVISED BY FILMMAKER - AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 15, 2016
One of the great documentary classics, Pierre Sauvage's examination of the importance of Yiddish to American Jews, originally shot in 1979, remains an important historical record. Through interviews, music, humor, poetry and film clips, the film features interviews with comedian David Steinberg, actor Herschel Bernardi, writer Leo Rosten, theatrical producer Isaiah Sheffer and scholar Dr. Joshua Fishman. Although Bernardi, Rosten and Sheffer are no longer with us, their observations and analyses are key to understanding the evolution of a living Yiddish culture today. Adding to our enjoyment are musical renditions by The Klezmorim, considered the world's first klezmer revival band.
